A personally guided small-group journey in Lapland

Northern Lights, sacred landscapes & slow autumn days in Finnish Lapland

The last golden days before Arctic winter.

The forests slowly grow quieter as autumn moves deeper into the North. Gold turns softer, the evenings darken earlier, and mist begins to rise above the lakes and fells.

This is the season between autumn and winter, when campfires feel warmer, mornings become crisp, and the Northern Lights often return to the sky above Lapland.

During this 8-day guided small-group journey, you travel through the autumn landscapes around Ylläs in Finnish Lapland at a slower rhythm, with time for nature, stories, local food, and meaningful encounters.

Along the way, you meet the people who shape life in the North: artisans, nature guides, local storytellers, and voices connected to reindeer culture and the seasonal rhythm of Lapland.

One of the week’s special days leads to the sacred lake Äkäsaivo, surrounded by quiet forests and old northern stories. Returning along the old road toward Kittilä, the landscapes open again near Pyhäjärvi, where autumn light reflects across the water and fells.

Depending on the seasonal rhythm, there may even be an opportunity to witness parts of the autumn reindeer round-up period, offering a rare glimpse into real life in reindeer country.

You spend time in forests painted with late autumn colours, visit the Kellokas Visitor Centre and Varkaankuru, take part in a traditional handicraft workshop, share meals prepared over the fire, and slow down through sauna, storytelling, and quiet moments in nature.

The hike to Särkitunturi reveals wide open fell landscapes under the shifting October sky, while evenings bring the possibility of Northern Lights dancing above the darkening horizon.

Meals throughout the week are simple, local, and often shared together. The journey ends beside the fire in the lavvo, with a farewell dinner beneath the Arctic autumn sky.

This journey is designed for travelers who don’t just want to see Lapland, but feel connected to its quieter rhythm.

Arrival

The road from Kittilä Airport winds through forests, lakes, and open fell landscapes before we arrive in Ylläsjärvi, a small village at the edge of the national park.

After check-in, there is time to settle in before we gather for a relaxed welcome dinner and the beginning of the week together, surrounded by the calm rhythm of the North.

And if the sky is clear, the Northern Lights may already appear above the fells.

Sacred places, old stories & hammocks beneath the trees

Day 1

We visit sacred Sámi sites around Ylläs, where quiet forests, dark lakes, and autumn fells carry stories far older than tourism. These landscapes have long been connected to beliefs, offerings, and a deep relationship with nature that still feels present today.

The pace remains gentle throughout the day. We stop often. Sometimes for stories, sometimes simply because the silence feels worth listening to.

For lunch, we prepare a small picnic in nature and hang hammocks between the trees. Wrapped in warm blankets beneath the autumn sky, some guests rest quietly while cold northern air moves through the forest and yellow leaves drift slowly to the ground.

As daylight fades earlier again in Lapland, we return slowly toward the village. Smoke rises from chimneys and campfires glow warmer in the darkening season.

Day 2

The morning begins at Kellokas Visitor Centre, where old photographs, stories, and exhibitions offer a glimpse into life in the fells before roads, ski lifts, and modern tourism shaped the region.

From there, we continue toward Varkaankuru Gorge. Wooden paths lead through quiet forests glowing in late autumn colours, across small streams and through landscapes shaped long ago by Ice Age waters and northern winters.

At the Varkaankuru kota, lunch is prepared over the fire while coffee boils slowly beside it and cool autumn air drifts through the trees. Around this time of year, the forest already feels quieter again, as if Lapland is slowly preparing for winter.

Later in the evening, we gather once more at the lavvo for one of Lapland’s simplest traditions: pancakes cooked over open fire. Smoke rises into the dark northern sky while stories move around the flames beside hot berry juice and the steady warmth of the fire.

Day 3

This day leads deeper into the autumn landscapes surrounding Ylläs, where quiet forests, dark lakes, and old stories remain closely connected to the rhythm of northern life.

We visit Äkäsaivo, one of the region’s old sacred lakes, surrounded by steep shores and still autumn water reflecting the changing northern light. For generations, places like this were connected to beliefs, offerings, and respect for the unseen forces of nature.

The journey continues along smaller roads through reindeer country toward Pyhäjärvi, where wide open landscapes and quiet shoreline views create one of the region’s most peaceful photography stops during autumn.

Along the way, stories about reindeer culture, seasonal life in Lapland, and the changing Arctic year accompany the drive. Depending on the seasonal rhythm and local activities, there may also be an opportunity to witness parts of the autumn reindeer round-up period, offering a rare glimpse into real working life in the North.

We stop often throughout the day. Sometimes for photographs, sometimes for coffee by the fire, and sometimes simply because the landscape asks us to slow down for a while.

Day 4

This morning we visit Joni’s workshop, where northern craftsmanship meets modern design.

Using reindeer antler and silver details, each guest creates a small handmade souvenir connected to Lapland’s natural materials and traditions. Fingers slow down. Conversations become quieter. Tools scrape softly against antler.

In the afternoon, the schedule opens up.

Some guests walk to the lakeside swing, others settle into a café with cinnamon buns and coffee. Some wander through local shops.

Not every memorable travel moment needs a program around it.

Day 5

Today begins with a gentle hike to Särkitunturi.

The trail climbs slowly upward through open fell landscapes glowing in autumn colours until the forests below begin to stretch endlessly toward the horizon. Gold, amber, deep green, and dark blue tones settle softly across the North during this time of year.

After lunch at Tunturiporo, we continue towards Jerisjärvi, where old fishing huts still stand quietly by the lakeshore as reminders of a life shaped by seasons, weather, and water.

Later in the day, we meet a local shaman for a personal encounter centred around northern spirituality, nature, and old beliefs that continue to live quietly beneath the surface of Lapland.

Some conversations stay with you long after the journey home.

Day 6

At the old lumberjack camp, the day slows into the rhythm of traditional northern wellbeing.

During the herbal workshop, local plants, old knowledge, and stories from the forest become part of the conversation. The scent of herbs mixes with wood, smoke, and the cool autumn air drifting in from the lake.

Later, the sauna is heated.

Some guests sit quietly on the dock between sauna sessions while mist rises from the water into the evening air. Others step directly into the cold lake before returning once more to the warmth of the sauna.

In the evening, we gather one last time at the lavvo.

Dinner is traditional moose stew with potatoes and lingonberries, prepared over the fire and shared beneath the northern sky. Clothes carry the scent of smoke afterwards. Nobody seems to mind.

And if the skies are clear, we may catch the Northern Lights moving silently above the autumn fells.

Departure

After breakfast, we drive back to Kittilä Airport.

The smell of campfire smoke, quiet conversations, and slow moments beside the fire begin to drift into memory somewhere along the road.

And usually, this is the moment guests quietly begin wondering when they might return to Lapland again.
